Significance of Dental Care & Hygiene

If your family has a sweet tooth, then your visits to the Dentist become more frequent. It is applicable to both adults & children. Proper dental hygiene leads to a healthy body. For the children in the family, a myriad of problems arises like tooth extraction, fillings, general cleaning which includes removal of tartar & plaque etc.
Preventative care is best in the case of children. Proper brushing can reduce frequent visits to the dentist. You should definitely buy a family dental insurance from an insurance company with liberal policies.

Family Dental Insurance

Any insurance is an agreement between the insurance provider & the client. The financial expenses of any emergency regarding dental care will be met by the insurance company. You will have to pay a fixed amount as premium to the insurance company every month.

The family dental insurance is applicable to the head of the family and all adults. Children below 18 are included. In some cases children upto the age of 22 are eligible for insurance, if they are not working fulltime/part time. Most of the insurance companies cover a range from 50 – 80 % of the fees.

Types of Family dental insurance

  • Direct reimbursement dental plan: – You get full coverage. This is a type of coinsurance where a small percentage is covered by the insurance provider & the rest by you.
  • Preferred providers: – The insurance provider will produce a panel of dental offices. Discounts are applicable only to the predefined list of the insurance provider. You do not have an option of choosing the dentist.
  • Capitation schemes: – A certain amount of fees is paid to the dentist in advance by the insurance provider. You can get treatment free of charge. The dentist will get the capitation without any obstacles.

Factors influencing Family Dental Insurance

1) Full coverage: - Some insurance companies have specific areas of coverage. Generally the common areas are removal of plaque & tartar, fillings; taking X-rays, tooth extraction etc. In some cases orthodontic areas are not touched including fixing of braces. The dental pre-existing conditions are also not taken into consideration, while the insurance is taken. So you should be aware of the areas which the insurance will cover. If you are a frequent visitor to the dentist, you can opt for a free dental checkup every six months.

2) Family members: – You should check that all family members including children come under the scheme of the insurance company. Children till 18 years should be covered.

3) Dental appointments: - The dental appointments should be scheduled according to your & your family’s convenience. It should not be a deal between the insurance provider & the dentist.

4) Selection of the Dentist: – There is a list of the preferred providers issued by the insurance company. But there are schemes in which you can select your dentist. Then the amount will be reimbursed to you at the submission of the bill.

5) Low premium: – If you are a frequent visitor go for high premium. This leads to more savings. If you are an occasional visitor, go for low premium. Here, when the bill is submitted to the insurance provider, they will deduct a certain amount & reimburse it.
