Prime Significance of Dental Insurance in Seniors
Mostly seniors will be retired persons & their income will be considerably low than other individuals. So in that case, their dental insurance should be that of low premium & should be covering the entire essential dental requirements .The teeth of the senior citizens are more vulnerable. Their income is supposed to be constant & not increasing with the cost of living. Thus they should procure the support of an external agency to support their dental requirements.

Managed Care Plans
The group of dentists who care for the aged are primarily selected by the insurance carrier who provides coverage for the various dental needs. Basically two types: -
1) PPO dental insurance: – the insurance providers predetermine the list of dentists. But you are free to consult outside the panel of dentists. But the annual premium is expensive, particularly for a senior citizen. You are directly paying to the dentist & then the amount is finally reimbursed to you after a fixed waiting period. Insurance is not covered for pre-existing conditions & even for orthodontic procedures & cosmetic procedures. May be after a long waiting period of maybe 18 months, some of the essential needs will be covered. The areas that are covered are general cleaning, fillings, extractions, X-rays etc. Sometimes dentures maynot be covered, but they are very significant as far as seniors are considered.
2) DHMO (dental health maintenance organization): – You are not permitted to consult outside the panel of dentists. Then the insurance carrier does not cover it. As the premiums are not so expensive, this insurance is not cumbersome for senior people.
3) Direct Reimbursement plans: – You are directly paying to the dentists. Then the insurance providers reimburse this. No deductibles & no co pay. Hence the premium will be high & mostly preferred by people who have a regular income.
